Capel St Mary is a village that was listed in the Domesday Book as part of the manor of Boynton. It was referred to by its current name, which derives from the Norman-French and Welsh word “capel” meaning chapel, in an early 13th-century charter from Dodnash Priory. Evidence of Bronze Age habitation has been recently discovered outside the village, and there is well-documented human settlement in the area dating back to the Roman period. During the construction of council houses on Windmill Hill at the west end of the village in the 1930s, the remains of a villa were found, along with a kiln and smaller artefacts such as coins and tiles.
